Report on HR Case Crunch – Takshak Perception 2023

1. Introduction

As part of the annual management fest Takshak, the Department of Human Resources organized an intensive two-day event titled HR Case Crunch on 10th and 11 April 2023. The event was designed to test participants’ analytical skills, industry awareness, HR competencies, and their ability to respond to real-time organizational challenges. Across four competitive rounds, the event integrated case-based learning, HR creativity, managerial decision-making, and rapid response under pressure.

The event was coordinated by Kasturi, Pragati, and Angeleen, and judged by respected faculty members and external experts.


2. Day 1 Activities

ROUND 1: When HR Met Hollywood – WORD SEARCH

The event began with an engaging activity where participants viewed a video clip and searched for HR-related terms using a word scramble grid. The task assessed quick thinking, observational skills, and HR vocabulary.

Rules & Structure

  • Video clip shown as the base stimulus
  • Participants searched for words related to themes shown in the video
  • No use of mobile phones or internet
  • Time: 10 + 15 mins + 5 mins submission
  • Evaluation by volunteer judges

The round set an energetic tone for the event and allowed teams to warm up intellectually while displaying team coordination and concentration.


ROUND 1 (Part 2): DARK ROOM – Behavioral & Problem Diagnosis

This round required deeper thinking. Based on the video shown, participants analyzed HR problems from the perspectives of both employees and employers.

Task Requirements

  • Identify personality types and workplace behaviors
  • Clearly state 6 problems (3 from employer perspective + 3 from employee perspective)
  • Submit a 200-word document
  • Develop new retention strategies for an advertising agency
  • Present a short role play
  • No internet use
  • Late submission penalty: –2 marks

Judging Criteria

  • Problem Identification: 6 marks
  • Document Clarity & Relevance: 4 marks
  • Timely Submission: 2 marks

This critical-thinking round was judged by Yashaswini Ma’am.
Participants demonstrated strong creativity and understanding of HR behavior analysis, retention challenges, and conflict diagnosis.


LUNCH BREAK


ROUND 2: Job Description & Title Creation

In the second major activity of Day 1, teams prepared recruitment posts for multiple platforms such as LinkedIn, newspapers, and job portals.

Task Elements

  • Create job postings for a given designation
  • Use chart paper & sketch pens
  • No internet usage
  • Submit within time

Teams showcased imagination, clarity, and professionalism in designing visually appealing and contextually accurate job posts.


ROUND 2 (Part 2): RAPID FIRE – HR Concepts

A fast-paced quiz round that tested participants’ foundational HR knowledge.

Rules

  • Each question answered within 20 seconds
  • Questions based on HR theories, concepts, and workplace practices
  • Judged by volunteers

The round encouraged quick recall, accuracy, and confidence under pressure.


3. Day 2 Activities

ROUND 3: HR Dashboard Analysis & Presentation

Participants were provided with different HR dashboards and were expected to interpret the data, develop insights, and present their analysis in a PPT.

  • Dashboard provided on the spot
  • PPT preparation & presentation
  • 5 mins presentation + 7 mins Q&A
  • Teams evaluated on interpretation, analytical depth, clarity, and presentation skills

This round strengthened participants’ analytical and decision-making capabilities using HR metrics and data visualization.


ROUND 4: CASE CRUNCH – Boardroom HR Crisis Simulation

The final and most challenging round simulated a high-stakes HR crisis.

Case Context

A group of laid-off employees resort to whistleblowing regarding:

  • Discrimination based on gender, nationality, age, and color
  • Issues related to outsourcing
  • Workplace harassment
  • Organizational image damage

Participants, acting as HR Managers, were summoned by the Board of Directors to:

  • Explain the situation
  • Defend HR decisions
  • Propose corrective actions
  • Present conflict-handling strategies
  • Recommend policy reforms

Rules

  • Time: 30 mins preparation + 75 mins presentation & discussion
  • No internet usage
  • Presentation in front of the board panel

This round showcased participants' ability to demonstrate leadership, crisis communication, ethical judgement, legal understanding, and strategic HR thinking.


4. Overall Event Impact

HR Case Crunch successfully blended theoretical understanding with hands-on HR problem solving. Students displayed strong teamwork, creativity, ethical judgment, and analytical clarity throughout all rounds.

The event achieved its objectives by:

  • Enhancing HR decision-making skills
  • Strengthening analytical abilities through dashboards and cases
  • Encouraging professional communication through role plays & boardroom simulation
  • Building confidence in handling real-world HR issues
  • Promoting critical thinking and creativity in HR solutions

5. Conclusion

The HR Case Crunch event at Takshak was a dynamic and enriching platform that enabled students to apply HR knowledge in challenging simulated environments. The detailed rounds, expert judging, and active participation made the event a memorable learning experience and a key highlight of Takshak.
