The Institute’s Centre for Leadership conducted a Leadership talk as a part of ‘Distinguished Leadership Talk Series’. The speaker for the session Dr. T V Rao, Chairman, T V Rao Learning Systems and Co-founder of the National HRD Network & Academy of HRD shared his insights and experiences highlighting the role of “Effective Teachers” from his book “Effective People”.
The session started with a brief welcome and introduction of Dr T V Rao by the Dean Dr Arunkumar.
Dr T V Rao, associated with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad for about 44 years in various capacities first as a Professor and until recently as IIMA Society and Board member. Through his experiences at IIM-A and highlighting examples of various distinguished achievers, Dr Rao emphasized that the foundation of every business and educational institution lies in serving people and making them happy.
Key highlights of the session:
i) Role of Teachers: Teach, disseminate, research and institution-building
A teacher should not only teach, but also conduct meaningful research and continue being a lifelong learner.
ii) When actions—like teaching—are done with intent, they become a purpose.
iii) Purpose-Driven Teaching: Teaching isn’t just a job; it’s a purposeful activity that shapes lives. What a teacher does in the classroom deeply influences students’ character and future.
iv) Character Over Currency: Success should be measured not by money, but by character and values.
v) Influence of Great Minds: examples of great visionary leaders such as Dr. Vikram Sarabhai and Prof. Anil Gupta who thought big and inspired others.
vi) Think Big, Build People: Effective institutions grow by developing the capabilities The backbone of any organization is its ‘people’ ; working towards achieving targets of their people, creating strong teams that can carry forward a shared vision.
vii) Focus on Youth: Investing in the younger generation is key to building a brighter future.
viii) Self-Publishing and Empowerment: Faculty and staff have the power to write and publish their own books, taking charge of their intellectual journey.
ix) Dr Rao further emphasized on four categories of teachers: Syllabus followers, Achievers, Visionaries & Leaders, Missionaries
x) Teachers can be a Directive teacher, or Non-Directive teacher
Dr Rao concluded his talk by emphasizing on being ‘super effective’ by being open and sensitive to the needs of others. Institutions should be used as opportunities and ‘teach to make a difference.’
The session was attended by the senior management team of Gokula Education Foundation (Engg & General Science) Dr Parswanath H V, Chief Executive, Dr Karisiddappa, Chief Academic Advisor, Sri.G.Ramachandra, Chief Of Finance and Dr Rajasab A H, Chief Research Advisor and Head, Doctoral program at MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology. The session was concluded with a Vote of Thanks and felicitation to Dr Rao by Dean Dr Arunkumar.
