Report on Industrial Visit to The Times of India Plant

Bommasandra

MSRIM Campus

The Department of Marketing and International Business organized an industrial visit to The Times of India Press, Bommasandra, on 15 April 2026 as part of the Sales and Distribution Management course. The visit was spearheaded by Dr. Niharika Mishra, Chairperson, Department of Marketing and IB, and was accompanied by Dr. Sankar Mukherjee, Associate Professor and Dr. Janardhan, Head Library along with 60 marketing specialization students.

The industrial visit was planned to provide students with practical exposure to the operations, production processes, and logistics involved in the functioning of a large-scale newspaper printing press, thereby strengthening the connect between classroom learning and industry practice. It served as an important experiential learning opportunity for students to understand how concepts taught in the classroom are applied in a real business environment.

During the visit, students were informed that the Bommasandra plant is the third largest printing facility of The Times of India in India, after Delhi and Mumbai, and that it operates round the clock, with peak activity during the night to ensure timely delivery of newspapers by 5:00 AM. They also gained insights into editorial decision-making, where important news received even close to midnight can still be incorporated into the final edition.

The visit offered valuable understanding of the printing process, including the use of the CMYK colour model for efficient newspaper production, the deployment of advanced imported machinery for high-speed and high-quality printing, and the sourcing of raw materials such as paper from Europe and Japan to meet the required quality and volume standards. Students also learned about the organization’s growing emphasis on sustainability, including the use of recycled paper and the use of different paper types depending on editorial and advertising requirements.

An important takeaway from the visit was the business model of the print media industry, where advertisement revenue plays a major role. Students were also made aware of current industry challenges, particularly the decline in readership among younger generations in the post-COVID period, and how the organization is seeking feedback and exploring ways to remain relevant in a changing media landscape.
