%u00a9 R & D Cell 2025 M S Ramaiah Institute of Management Date: 21st May 2025Venue: Board RoomSpeaker: Prof. Preeja ShreedarTopic: Mentoring through Metaphor analysisThe R&D Cell of MSRIM successfully conducted the fifth session of ReThink on 21st May2025. ReThink is a platform designed to encourage intellectual discussions, promote interdisciplinary research, and strengthen the research culture within the institution. This initiative continues to create opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to engage in meaningful research conversations and knowledge sharing.Overview of the Research TalkThe fifth session of the ThinkResearch Colloquy %u201cReThink%u201d, a series aimed at fostering innovative academic discussions, was successfully held on May 21, 2025. The session titled %u201cMentoring through Metaphor Analysis%u201d was conducted by Prof. Preeja Sreedhar and drew participation from both teaching and non-teaching staff. The talk explored creative approaches to mentoring using behavioral science, emotional theory, and reflective tools.During the fifth session of the ThinkResearch Colloquy \delivered an engaging talk on the theme \introduced metaphor analysis as a qualitative technique rooted in behavioral science, emphasizing its value in understanding students%u2019 emotions and perspectives during academic mentoring. A key focus of the session was the demonstration of the Rose-Bud-Thorn (RBT) check-in tool%u2014an accessible and reflective technique where %u201cRose%u201d represents what went well (positive emotions), %u201cBud%u201d indicates what has potential to grow (hope and anticipation), and %u201cThorn%u201d symbolizes what didn%u2019t go well (negative emotions or challenges). Faculty members were encouraged to adopt this method to recognize emotional biases in students and offer more empathetic, tailored support. Prof. Preeja further linked the RBT tool to Robert Plutchik%u2019s Wheel of Emotions (1980), which identifies eight core emotions%u2014Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Surprise, Disgust, Anticipation, and Trust%u2014helping mentors map emotional insights with clarity. The discussion expanded to explore other supportive strategies such as Music Therapy, Dance Movement Therapy, and Inner Child Healing, highlighting their potential in facilitating deeper emotional exploration. A major takeaway was the suggestion to develop a comprehensive mentoring blueprint, uniquely designed for RIM, incorporating these metaphor-based and emotionally aware approaches. This blueprint could serve as a standard mentoring model and potentially be copyrighted as an institutional innovation.ConclusionThe session was thought-provoking and well-received, encouraging participants to explore metaphor analysis and emotional theory as transformative tools in mentoring. The Rethink platform once again proved to be a valuable space for academic innovation and reflective practice.
